Harry Lee Harllee papers, 1943-1951.

Business and personal correspondence and records of Harllee's contracting business, including letter, 17 May 1943, from daughter Myrtle L Harllee, re her work in California with Lockheed Aircraft Plant and flying with Civil Air Patrol; letter, 22 June 1943, to Myrtle L. Harllee recommending that she join WACCS or WAVES and conveying news re Alex Quattlebaum in Australia and nephew Robert Lee Harllee at camp in Alabama. Other papers document the buying and selling of wildlife collections for Harllee's private museum, a panther hunt in Florida, purchase of taxidermy supplies from J.W. Elwood Supply Co.(Omaha, Neb.), and Paasche Airbrush Company (Chicago, Ill.), and acquisition of books re fish and game of North America. Collection also contains hunting and fishing licenses,1948; membership cards for S.C. Wildlife Federation and American Legion. Business papers include balance sheet, 1949, for Woodstone Hunting Club and Corp.; sub-contractor letters to Harllee-Quattlebaum Construction Company; letter, 14 Aug. 1950, from Congressman John L. McMillan re possible increase in defense spending and the potential that Harllee could receive government contracts through C.W. Martin, U.S. Dept. of Commerce. Other business records concern Harllee's construction company and include such information as job numbers, property names, supply and lumber lists including prices, house plans and measurements. Also includes photographs of H.L. Harllee wearing World War I army uniform, scenes of hunting and fishing, vacations in Florida, Harllee's home in Florence, S.C., and the adjacent grounds of his natural history museum; volume, [ca. 1950-1951], contains list of fresh and salt water fish of North America that Harllee needed to collect for his museum.

Harry Lee Harllee was a naturalist, ornithologist, taxidermist, and founder of the Harllee Museum of Natural History in Florence, S.C. In 1927, he founded the Harllee Construction Company, also in Florence, S.C. In 1947, his nephew, Alexander McQueen Quattlebaum (1913-1987) joined the company as a partner, and it was renamed Harllee-Quattlebaum, Inc.
